Can't hurt to try it, I suppose. A friend (off-list) also mentioned that re-installing the original L2 cache chip might do the trick, as it did in his case. That'll be on my list of things to try.
I haven't absolutely ruled out a bad RAM chip, although all software checks come up negative.
