I had problems with a USB card and an Iomega external CDR drive. The USB card is working just fine now; the drive is running off of a friend's Linux latop now. Suggest you test the USB card (perhaps pick up a cheap mouse) before proceeding, this will isolate the problem.
Another thing to try is using the Apple USB drivers, as opposed to whatever drivers came with the PCI card.
