Easy enough for modems to get shot with a spike down the phone line. The fact that a regular phone will still work while plugged into the fax modem doesn't mean much. I think the innards are fried.

Accessing the s/w should be different than having said s/w work as a fax. Are you saying you can't open the fax s/w? It's been a while, but I should think the s/w would still open. Will it connect to another modem?
