one thing that has worked for me:

when my computer fails to read any drives I load a CD with my OS9 system folder on it in my default CD-Drive and reboot. It starts from the CD and has helped me out of similar jams.

I was about to bust out some Jaguar action on my PowerTower Pro (Sonnet 700), but I ran across some weirdness with my CD readers. I have the following drives:
Apple SCSI DVD reader
SCSI CD reader from 7-series Power Mac
MagicWriter IDE CD rewriter on SIIG IDE card
Generic IDE CD rewriter on SIIG IDE card
When I couldn't get OS X to do its thing and some people on the OS X list helped me out, I tried to eliminate variables by booting from a 7.6 CD. No dice. The SCSI DVD reader will mount the CD once the machine is on, but I just get the flashing floppy when I try to boot with C held down and the CD in that drive. The other three drives won't even mount the CD. When I try to boot from them, the machine just boots into 9.1 without doing anything. All of these drives will mount and play other CDs. Has anyone had this problem or anything like it?
