Although you can get many CD-ROMs to operate with old Apple CD Driver 5.3.1,
I agree that Intech's CD/DVD Speedtools is a splendid product. I've
recommended it here many times. (No connection with the company, just a
satisified paying customer.)

As did Hans, I found FWB's CD driver limited in its support, even newer
versions. But I've used CD/DVD Speedtools to run everything from the stock
Teac 516S CD-ROM to the Yamaha 8424S CD-RW to, so help me, some kind of
Micronet combination CD-ROM and storage RAID that I lugged home to install
OS 7.6 from a CD onto an old (but game) Mac IIci that had no CD-ROM. (The
Mac IIci displays weather data for our Oregon Scientific electronic weather
station at work.)

While an OEM version of FWB CD-ROM Toolkit came with Power Computing
machines, it isn't upgradeable; FWB regularly releases new versions for
which customers must pay ($20). But Intech pledges free upgrades for life --
discussed here: http://www.speedtools.com/Free.html. And if forced FWB to
lower its price to match Intech's ($50).

And dig: You can download CD/DVD Speedtools, install it and see whether it
will, indeed, do the job for you (I think it's good for 10 computer restarts
or something): http://www.speedtools.com/Free.html Note: It's for OS 7.0 to
9.2.2 only.

They have several products, including disk utilities and a hard disk driver
that I'm sure is splendid. Intech just seems like a classy company worth
recommending for folks who need more than 5.3.1 and need (and deserve) more
than FWB offers.
