.dmg's should be opened with Disk Copy (if you are using 10.1 or 10.2) or Disk Utility (if you are using 10.3). If you need to mount a .dmg under OS9 you should use Disk Copy 6.4 (never released publicly by Apple) you can get it from here http://homepage.mac.com/alk/personal/stuff.html but it may not work for all .dmg files as the page states.

Well how about that!
I just got the current digest and was reading this thread... Just as I was about to send a reply saying to go get Disk Copy 6.4 (6.5 beta also works quite well), I saw this - the very last - message in the digest!
;-)
DC 6.4 was finished in 2001, but never released to the public. It _was_ made available to service techs. DC 6.5b13 was finished in 2002. I can't remember how I found 6.5b13...
Anyway, it will open most .dmg files (but not all, IIRC). You should consider, though, that most .dmg files contain programs intended for use under OS X. Unless they are carbonized, they won't work in OS 8/9. And even if they are carbonized, they may still not work right.
