That's correct. Any version of OS 8/8.1 should install with the HDD drivers
being updated during the initial stages of installation.

" The CD-ROM drive on the other hand is another situation and it appears
that the only Apple extension that makes it work is the CD-ROM extension
that came originally on System 7.6. It is a Teac drive so I do not know
whether the FWB Toolkit will fix it or
not. Anyone familiar with these HHD and CD-ROM drive issues on the
PowerBase? "

It should be the same Teac 516s that was the stock CD-Rom in the
PowerCenterPros. It's a sweet unit actually. The version of FWB CD-Rom
toolkit which came with the PowerComputing 7.5.3 install disks should also
work with OS 8.1.

If you're caught in the dilemma wherein an Apple OS CD won't drive the
Teac, and so you can't boot from an Apple OS8 CD to install the system, you
can try this:

Boot from the PowerComputing 7.5.3 CD
Initialize the HDD into 2 partitions, making the second one at least large
enough to take a basic install of OS 7.5.3 plus FWB CDROM toolkit and any
useful utilities you have (eg Norton Disk Doctor vers. 3.5.3 or higher)
Install the PowerComputing 7.5.3 on the second partition.
Select the second partition os the startup system.
Reboot and insert any OS8 install CD in the Teac drive
Install OS8 on the first partition
Insert the PowerComputing CD in the Teac, and install FWB toolkit on the
first partition.
Select the first partition os the startup system.
Book from the first partition
Insert any Apple OS8 and install on the second partition over the existing
7.5.3, ignoring the call to udpate the apple CD drivers. Alternately, do a
clean install of OS8 on the second partition and then install FWB CDROM
Toolkit there too.

The side benefit to the above procedure is that future directory problems
with the first partition can usually be easily repaired by booting from the
second partition via the cmd-opt-shift-delete key combo and applying repair
utilities to the first partition from there.
