You'll need a driver for the card. Apple probably covers most if the card is compatible with your OS.
Haven't tried USB in OS 8, but I know many USB2 cards are incompatible with OS 9. I can only presume it to be worse with previous OS's. You might need to research the specific card for the OS, and/or use older USB1 cards, maybe even with their vendor drivers.

I've had good luck with "USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1" in OS 9 on a PTP with both an older SIIG USB1 card & a USB2 Sonnet Tempo Trio card without using vendor drivers. I have another oddball USB2 card that's only recognized in OS X.
