I've got a USB/Firewire card in my power center pro 180 running under OS 8.6. No
problems.

Heya. I also have had a SIIG USB 1 card work in the PowerWave. SIIG is
a kewl company like that.
I currently run a Sonnet Tango (Firewire/USB 1) in my Wave. It's been a
little funky to set up, but it works well.
Both of those are under OS 9.1.

You'll need to make sure that the card works with the voltage of the
PCI slots in the computer. I forget what it is off-hand, but that's why
newer PCI cards won't work in there -- they presume a higher voltage to
the slot. The good news is that most companies either tell you what
this is or advertise that it will work on Macs of that period. Adaptec
is especially good about this, as is SIIG.

Because it's primarily a hardware issue, you really shouldn't need any
drivers. Apple's work just fine.

You also probably won't be able to get USB2 speeds out of a USB2 card
in there. Again, it's the age of the OS talking. However, firewire
works decently well, even with generic FW cards. However, the best bang
for your buck is probably Sonnet's Trio or Tango, because of the lack
of slots in the Wave.

Best,
~M
