Actually we don't know whether or not it would be possible to access the
internet from both machines as they currently stand.

We currently use dial-up and we do not have a router nor a hub. Eventually,
when we can sort out what upgrades we need, we want to switch to DirecWay
internet access via our DirecTV satellite dish.

We don't know if
the connectors on that cable are official RJ-45 connectors. We could buy a
crossover cable but don't have one now. The problem is, we just aren't sure
what to use.

I hope these answers are concise and on-target and help to fill in the
picture. I'll try to answer any further questions the same way. Don't have a
digital camera in working condition right now so let's see if this gets us further.
If we really need to we can ask a friend to come over and take a picture.

Thanks, Greg.

Monica,
Still another question. Your current internet connection is on a pc or a mac? Is there a 3rd computer that is a pc? Check with DirectWay as about a year ago they were not too keen on mac support. Since both computers have ethernet (RJ45), that would be the best way with a router. Then all computers will have internet access as well as file sharing. You can setup a temporary file sharing over the slow phonenet localtalk if you need to transfer some files right away. Just install the phonenet with a terminator on each end and one phone cord. In your control panels set appletalk to the correct serial port. Its been a while since I used 9, so I think you may have to go into 'users/groups' to setup accounts and setup 'sharing'. Here is a link that may help: http://kb.indiana.edu/data/airy.html

The same setup will work for ethernet, but you would have to setup your IP addresses statically and of course set appletalk to ethernet. A crossover cable would be used for filesharing.

When you get your Directway, they may charge you per connected computer. Don't sign up for the extra connections. Its like the old AT&T when they charged you per telephone installed in a home. Just get your own router that connects to the directway (DSL, Cable modem) and that will allow all computers to connect via etherenet. You will then use standard cat5 patch cables to connect to the router. Crossover not needed.

If you have a PC with any connection and an available ethernet port, you can setup windows file sharing to share the internet connection with your mac.
