The easiest, simplest way to get both machines on the Internet together is to purchase an external PC modem (9 pin serial) and a router with a serial port. (D-Link DI-704, USR 8000, SMC Barricade <don't have model number handy>)

Plug computers into router using Cat 5 cable (not telephone cord) and modem into router serial port. Set router to DHCP on the LAN side and dialup on the WAN side. Set computers to do DHCP and you're done.
