Although the ram checks out okay, it still sounds like a ram mismatch of some sort. A memory check occurs at startup, but doesn't occur at restart, which is why restart is faster, especially when lots of ram has been added. You can disable the ram check at startup in OS9 or below by opening the memory control panel with the command-option keys held down. This brings up a 4th, hidden control under the ram disk setup which allows you to forego the memory check at startup. If anyone is interested in launching a class action suit against Apple for hiding this option and thereby pissing away time which could otherwise have been spent checking email spam, playing Quake or typing a novel, let me know.
