I hear the "new >mail" noise, which I have configured to not happen for list message, just >for inbox messages. So I press command control b to view the message >browser, click on the in tray and see what's up. Next I command ` a few >times to shift to the message I was reading. When I finish it, I press >command [ to advance to the next list message, but it doesn't work >anymore because the mail browser window is now on InTray, not whatever >folder I was reading from. I think this may be a focus bug or some limitation on the amount of stored in memory of folder lists, but there is no general problem with open a message and advancing to the next in that folder *as long as the folder in question is _still_open_ or reselected". It doesn't have to be the last active window though. This even after you've been to another folder in the browser or in Recent Messages. It even works with the Browser or folder window hidden or the Recent Messages window being the last selected window.
