I believe the issue is we need more than one flag or label per message. At the moment we have one and a half; - the label (customizable color and label name with associated keyboard shortcut) - the read/unread flag (which only counts half because - surprise surprise! - it changes from unread to read once you read the message (and the info whether it has been replied to or forwarded gets lost if one toggles back from read to unread :-( )
I use the labels for prioritizing and my folder structure for categorization (by project, by partner, etc.). I would love to have at least two (or even more) labels (e.g. 'important' plus 'needs to be dealt with very soon'), and also the possibility to associate a message with more than one folder (so I can put a message into a certain partner folder and at the same time into a certain project folder).
