Apart that I am rather around 150 spams/day on my "worst" account, I must say with more than 2000 messages in my main database and a dozen accounts I don't slow down. I would recommend you restart PM with the command and alt keys pressed, you'll get a "maintainance" window that proposees you various options like compacting the database, checking its consistency or rebuilding its indexes. Try one of them at a time, within a couple of years use this cleaned everything up two or three times in my case...
