I experience this slowness too, and it is very annoying.  On my G4 1.2
GHz, if I select the In box, then hold the down arrow key passing every
folder until the trash, it takes 10 seconds.  There are 24 folders,
several have tens of thousands of messages.

But worse is the time it takes for PM to do 'look ahead typing'.  That
is, take a folder with many message, sort by subject (fast!), then type
'mes', wait, PM will select the 1st message with subject starting with
'mes'.  In a folder with 25000 messages, this takes 65 seconds!
