OUCH! The mutli-paragraphed subject line of this thread was making a hideous mess of my mail browser -- I actually thought there was a bug in the app at first, but no, it was just somebody pasting half an email into their subject line for some reason.
I've fixed the subject line locally, and figured that if I sent this email to the list then people could reply to *it* rather than to the earlier ones in the thread -- which were just propogating the problem further.
