But you need to understand the history. Mac Opt key is designed for the special characters those which are not labeled on your keyboard, while PC Alt key is designed for alternated key stroke for hotkeys because they were not used to mouse. Without alt key, you weren't even able to pull down any menu, y'know. Now even with the current NT Kernel, you still can't get optional characters as easy as Mac can.
