This is not a 'general' behavior as far as I know. I sometimes don't reboot for a month and have PM constantly running w/o a problem (backup every day) - I do that even though I have been warned that it's not good to backup with PM running as the backup can be corrupted then. So far it hasn't bitten me... knock on wood for the future. (On the 'learning' side I do have begun to do a 'correct' backup from time to time with PM shut down).
