If you export your address book to Apple AddressBook from the export
assistant (menu file/database), your contacts are exported directly in
AddressBook; no need to import. You can also synchronize automatically,
in either or both ways, between Apple AddressBook and PowerMail (see
synchronization preference pane).

Do they open correctly when you double-click them in the Finder, or do
you need to drag them to the application to open them?

I suppose you get this error on Mac OS 9; in this case, increase the
memory allocated to PowerMail. Depending of the size of your database,
typically between 1 and 10 more MB.
