Please note that this often doesn't work in the Finder. BatchMod is
better getting to permissions in nested folders and files. At least this
is true in Jaguar pre .8.

Also, when permissions have been wrecked, as it usually is if you have
installed anything or whatever, run Disk Utility, preferably as root (use
app Pseudo or Skeleton Key for that) and repair permissions when booted
from your OS X system. 
Or run the same command in the terminal:

sudo diskutil repairPermissions /
<your password>
