Yes, it seems a bit odd to me too, to having lost the Internet Preference
Panel.

But there are easy solutions, even if Apple does not bring it back.

For example: "More Internet" (do a search on VersionTracker) - tada, all
former options of the Internet Helper are back, you can assign all
helpers (also ftp etc.) within one little location via the System Preferences.

I know there exist still other such helpers, but I forgot the name(s).
