All, In the normal course of operation this afternoon (4.2b6), I too am now experiencing the off-by-one error -- in my In Tray.
I received and read some mail. After this, I noticed that the In Tray was still bolded, yet there were no unread messages to be found. A few minutes later I received a new piece of mail, totalling one piece of unread mail, and the In Tray became unbold. At this point I realised that when there are no unread messages, the status display indicates there are -1 unread messages. It seems the rule for bolding the In Tray is to do so when unread != 0, which is the case for -1. I can't discern what triggered this. "Rebuilding the sort indices" did not solve the problem.
