A long, long, time ago, Matthias Hebsacker reported a problem with PowerMail accessing his hard disk often enough to keep it from sleeping.
I just downloaded the app in order to see how it is coming along, and to decide if it is ready for prime time as far as my email needs. I seem to have tried a demo some time ago, because the one I just downloaded says it has expired. The thing that now precludes me from buying PowerMail is that I seem to have the same problem that Matthias had back then: PowerMail is accessing my hard disk about every second. Just as he describes below in the message I drug out of my archive, the access stops when I quit PowerMail, and starts again when I launch PowerMail. In order to use the demo (reset its 30 day timer), I assume I'm going to have to reformat my hard disk. I am certainly not going to do that if PowerMail is going to access my hard disk every second. The noise will drive me around the bend on my desktop, and sap my battery on my laptop. So I need to know if the problem is specific to expired demo versions or not. If the registered version does this constant disk access, there is no need for a demo. Thanks in advance! --Lyle (I had the About PowerMail window open to check the version, and happen to have the volume turned up. The cancellation stamp noise made me about jump out of my skin!!!) :-) On Wed, 4 Dec 2002 21:58:11 +0100, "Matthias Hebsacker" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> is alleged to have written: > > >Problem is there when Powermail is running and immediately gone if I quit it. > >I never had this problem at any time since I sue MacOS X (in ancient >times with MacOS 7, Faxstf was sometimes cause of a similar problem >because it was polling it's own Fax In folder every second after this >app was to stupid to get it itself if it's receives a fax...) - >butwell, this is 6 years ago... > >I went through Powermail and unchecked every setting which might >cause activity, like indexing, mail checking, a.s.o.; and I also dont >have any automatic option in the OS on , lik eindexing, automatic >http/dial in connects a.s.o. > >It's just like this: my computer in this configuration will spin down >it's HD after 2 minutes, and go to sleep after 10 minutes - and it >does it since a year or so, without any problems, even with tons of >other app's open. > >As long as Powermail is not running - even if it's the only programm, >I have a Hardisc Access altering every 12 and then every 18 seconds, >HD stays powered up, same the computer. > >And again, to make it clear: this immediately stops if I hit "Quit" >in powermail, I dont have to touch anything else. > >And I had it from the first moment I powered up Powermail the very >first time; also before I changed any setting from the default >settings. > > I use MacOS X 10.1.5. > >Matthias > >>Have you checked everything under Setup/Mail Scheduling?
