It times out because while it is receiving mail it is trying to send it
at the same time....  I forward almost all incoming email to an archive
account on another system...

As for why it is timing out - it is because I am on a modem...

Consider this though: why shouldn't I be able to compose and email when
my SMTP server is unavailable and then when it is be able to reliably do
something to actually send it off?... The "Send waiting messages" option
just doesn't work because it doesn't send anything out...  Every other
email program I know of has an option to retry the send - and it actually
works... Powermail's does NOT work properly...
