Update on this issue: Selecting lots of records actually works OK. I had
a corrupted message in the database that could not be selected, so any
selection range that included that record would fail.

I spend about 9 hours selecting records, moving and deleting yesterday,
then did a Compact Database. Things are working much faster now, so it
seems more than ever an auto purge of the mail database would be a really
good idea.
