Actually, it doesn't. When I realised that PM had put things in the trash but the icon still showed empty, I too expected that selecting the trash in the Finder would force the icon to update. But it didn't. Selecting it, opening the Trash, closing it again, none of these updated the icon. Since this is apparently an Apple issue it's now rather off topic for this list, but I offer this info for reference -- and to close the thread.
