The builtin "zip" function in Mac OS X is NOT fully Windows-compatible though. At least not in my experience. Why this is so I have no idea. I got ZipIt <http://www.maczipit.com/> instead. "a Macintosh program that zips and unzips archives in a format fully compatible with PKZip for the IBM and zip implementations on other systems".
