Must be a Leopard thing or even a 5.6.1 thing.

Here is what I get, using 5.5.3 under Tiger on an Intel iMac.  The
following was taken from Activity Manager just a few moments ago. 
PowerMail had been running for at least 8 consecutive hours, with 2
hours actual CPU time:
