to which Mikael offered some advice. I have, I believe, now cracked the problem. In brief the solution lay in the fact that I had set up the new account by Duplicating an existing account and changing the data in the copy. The saved altered duplicate failed. When I made a New account, all worked perfectly. It would seem that duplication is not always a 'good thing'. I found the solution when trying to add an account to my wife's machine which runs PM 4.2.1 under OS 9. Here PM reports an informative error message which includes information on the sender's email address; it was clear that PM was actually using an address from the original account and ignoring the duplicate's data.
