Can you copy the text to a hex editor to see which character the end of line is in Powermail? Normally, these rectangles are shown when the font doesn't contain the character. The end of line should be a line feed (decimal: 10, hex: 0A) on a Mac, but perhaps Powermail is doing something funky there.
