Simple answer:
Menlo is not a font for any random use, because it's the default font for the
_Terminal_ since Snow Leopard. And just because of this the paragraph sign has
to be showed.
Just change to an other monospace font like Courier or so.

Can you copy the text to a hex editor to see which character the end of line is
in Powermail? Normally, these rectangles are shown when the font doesn't
contain the character. The end of line should be a line feed (decimal: 10, hex:
0A) on a Mac, but perhaps Powermail is doing something funky there.

I see the rectangle after the "real" words but not at the end of the other

Sounds reasonable.
I guess text editors know about this and simply hide the paragraph sign somehow?

Never liked Courier very much (at least not at the small sizes I prefer) so I
guess I'll switch back to good old ProFont. ;-)
Thank you,

Unless as the line break character isn't changed at copy & paste, PowerMail
uses 0D (CR) as a line break, see:
<http://www.tobiasjung.net/storage/hexfiend_pm.png>
So it's not the OS X standard line break but nothing funky, too. ;-)
