Subject: Powernet: Hot Spot Questions

I know the questions being asked have been asked and answered
just recently, but at the time I wasn't looking for the answers. I am asking
for a fellow technician that is working in our Corrective Actions Group, so
please answer these questions for me, so I can get the answers to him.

                Thanks in advance,

                        Hot Spot Benchmarking Questions

1. Plant?
Fort Calhoun Station

2. What is your criteria for posting Hot Spots?
A localized (point) source:
∙ that has a contact dose rate (taken with a G-M type instrument) of ≥ 100
mRem/hr
DDE and
∙ the contact dose rate is ≥ five times the 30 centimeter dose rate.
∙ that is accessible.

3. At what point do you flush or shield Hot Spots for personnel exposure?
We have no set criteria we evaluate each hot spot on a case by case basis

4. If the Hot Spot is not expected to create a dose gradient in the area being
accessed, what are your actions (track / trend)?
It becomes a Radiological Awareness Point: A localized source of radiation that
meets the hot spot
posting criteria and is in such a location that it is deemed not accessible.
For the purpose of identifying, demarcating and surveying, temporarily
accessible is defined to be any location that is greater than eight feet off the
floor and is in such a location that an individual can, access within 30
centimeters, for
less than seven calendar days (via a ladder, scaffolding or climbing on pipes).
A Radiological Awareness Point that becomes accessible, for a period of less
than seven days, need not have its classification upgraded to a hot spot
provided its
location is clearly demarcated in such a manner as to provide notification of
its existence
to personnel working in the area
