1. Tennelec 5XLB, Tennelec LB4100, Protean-WPC-9550, Ludlum 3030, and
Canberra iSolo

2. Same, except we do not currently use the beta on the iSolo

3. Standard QC: daily source & background tests with established bounds -
normally +/- 2-sigma. We do not perform chi-square except as part of
troubleshooting.

4. All the above listed instruments are in our RP count room. The checks
are done daily by RP technicians. The instrument-specific qualifications cover
these tasks.

5. For most, it is +/- 2-sigma. The background bounds, in particular
alpha, for the gas-proportional counters are fixed limits due to their very low
levels. Normally +/- 10% of an established value. For example, the alpha
background on the Protean & Tennelecs is about 0.05 cpm, or about 1 count in
20-minutes. Even on additional count in a 20-minute background can cause a
2-sigma test failure and this will happen fairly often.

Subject: Powernet: Count Room Instruments

Palo Verde requests information on the following:

  1. What equipment do you use for Alpha smear and air sample counting?

  1. What equipment do you use for Beta smear and air sample counting?

  1. What statistical tests (LAC) do you perform on your scaler counting
equipment, e.g., Chi-Squared Testing, Confidence Interval Testing, etc.?

  1. Where / when do you perform long term performance checks, e.g., are after
instrument calibration, in the Cal Lab facility or at the use location? Is
this a RP Tech function or is a separate qualification required?

  1. For daily performance checks, what source confidence levels do you use,
e.g., within 2 sigma standard deviation?
