>From Callaway

First, Callaway does not provide instruments to the local hospital. Our State
Emergency Management Agency provides those for the hospital use.

For In Plant lockers, the quarterly response checks are done with the normal
source(s) used in plant. We place response check sources in the locker to do
the checks (Ion Chambers use a nominal 2 millicurie strontium wheel source,
friskers and low range GM Hot Dog instruments use a Cs-137 button source
approximately 90 microcuires. Each scale is based upon distance. High range
instruments (telepoles) use a shielded source jig that has an approximate 20
millicurie Cs-137 source in it. We had the necessary sources built for each
emergency locker location.

Each scale is tested, and scales not tested are labeled on the instrument. For
example the low range GM Hot Dog probe instrument has an internal detector for
the high range. These are not typically response checked).

For the "prior use" response checks of the Field Monitoring instruments, we
have a special procedure to perform a one point response check on one scale.
It is to a Cs-137 button source that is kept with the Field Monitoring Vehicle
in a case labeled UN2910 to allow it to be taken on the public road when the
Field Monitoring team is deployed.

Subject: Powernet: Operational Checks of Emergency Instruments

SONGS requests information regarding how you perform the quarterly operational
and prior to use checks of emergency radiological survey instruments,
particularly the instruments provided to hospitals on your emergency plan.

1. Do you have a sticker affixed to the instrument indicating the range
of reading that the meter should indicate when response checked?

2. What do you use to response check emergency instruments?

Thanks, Sandy
