Palisades is looking to enhance our source control program and would like
insights to other sites' control programs.

Please respond to the following questions, simplistic responses are fine,
elaboration is welcome. I will be happy to share results with interested
parties, just contact me.

Source Questions:

Do you use a vendor database to track sealed sources such as Sentinel, VSDS and
any recognized benefits from use?

We use SourceTrax from WMG. It was actually made for us. One of our biggest
issues has been sources being transferred form one storage location to another.
It would take time for the paperwork to catch up. We just recently opened up
access to it for RP and Chemistry qualified Source Users to perform source
transfers in real time. No more sending paperwork for updates and not getting
there. The system tracks Exempt and Non-Exempt. Tracks source leak checks.
Electronic Check out and in which will be implemented soon. Can upload source
certificates to the record. Tracks transfers. Provides instant access to the
inventory with search capability.

Do you have enhanced tracking tools such as Bar Code or RFID chips on the
sources? Recognized benefits such as zone tracking?

Not at this time.

Do you have specific source storage location control owners (RP and Non-RP)?

RP and Chemistry control all radioactive sources on site. Qualified Users can
check out sources through one of them. Storage locations are established by the
source administrator, controlled by Chemistry or RP.

Do you include chemistry cross check sources in you source control program
(sealed or unsealed)?

Yes.

Do you track plant equipment installed sources and is it procedurally required?
(ARMs, Gas Chromatographs)

Yes. Permanently install sources have their own location in the system. Do not
track GLDs.

Disposal methods for retired source and recommended vendors?

I don't get involved with disposal. Currently retired sealed source are secured
in our waste handling facility. Others may be disposed by plant system.

Part 30 sources tracked in source control program?

Yes, as in like irradiators, AmBe, etc..

Specific action is source control procedure for control of Radiograph sources?

No, not in our source control procedure other procedures have guidance for
control of Non-Plant licensed sources.

Control of Polonium 210 sources used for static elimination (Part 30 sources)

Don't know of any.

Do your technical specifications address/differentiate Polonium 210 sources (>5
micro-curies of alpha emitting material)

Don't know off hand.

Any other unique program elements at your site?

Sources are checked out to a User. The User returns the source. An independent
verification of the returned source is required.

We appreciate your time and feedback

Mike
