Palo Verde is considering it, and I believe the Chief Nuclear Officers are considering it as an industry-wide initiative to decrease operating costs. I understand there are some legal hurdles, and we will need our drone pilots to be formally licensed if we want to use drones for anything.
I like the idea of plume tracking with drones far better than I like the idea of plume tracking with vans full of humans. I’m not yet convinced that we can make the initiative cost-effective, but drone technology is improving extremely rapidly. With the drone technology I know of today, there are still some significant issues I’m concerned about. I think there are still issues with operating drones in high winds or in the rain. Using the same drone to pull air samples and measure dose rates will lead to systematic dose rate measurement error if the air sample medium becomes a radiation source with significant dose rates. Learning how to fly drones without crashing is non-trivial. Drones require maintenance and repairs, and we will need to develop, hire, or contract out the expertise to maintain our drone fleet. Is there a place for aerial drones at NPPs? The FAA regulations are not finalized as yet, but the regulations on UAS is set to be put into effect this August. https://www.faa.gov/uas/ Would radiological surveillance, perimeter security, inclement weather, and other uses make drones worthwhile ? Some DOE facilities have implemented aerial surveillance, perhaps NPPs could benefit.
