All,

In an effort to compare apples to apples I want to add a bit more detail
upfront before answering your questions. At Diablo Canyon, RP Engineering is
responsible for technical support and maintenance (procedure revs, program
changes, etc) of the following programs:
Rad Waste
Rad Materials
Regulatory Affairs
ALARA
RP Operations
Internal and External Dosimetry
REMP Program and Sample collection
RP portable and some fixed instrumentation
Confined Space Program - may be temporary
Other RP related things I have forgotten

1) We have a total of six people in RP Engineering. Five have RP Engineering
related titles and one has a Health Physicist title. All the RP Engineers are
in a professional union with fairly rigid job descriptions and lines of
progression.
2) The entry level RP Engineer position requires a Bachelor's degree in some
science type field, but there is some latitude. The HP position does not
require a Bachelor's degree.
3) There are lines of progression within the RP Engineering job. They include
Senior, Advising, Senior Advising and Principal. With the exception of
Principal, there are primarily years of experience requirements with more
restrictive "desired" qualifications. Principal requires a formal degree in
Health Physics and a CHP. The defined line of progression stops at Senior
Advising. The Principal position is at the sole discretion of PG&E. The
original intent of the Principal position at PG&E was to provide a career track
that did not require going into "management".
4) Only the principal requires a CHP. At this time at Diablo Canyon we have
one CHP, one person who has passed Part 1 and is taking Part 2 this year and
one crazy person who is taking both Part 1 and Part 2 this year.
5) We are all salaried employees, however contractually we are paid overtime if
we are required to work on a non-workday.

Thanks,

Linda

CNS is conducting a benchmark of staff health physicist positions in the
industry and would like any information you may be willing to share.

1. How many staff health physicists do you have on staff?

2. What are the qualifications for being a staff health physicist?

3. Do you have a Sr staff health physicist profile and if so, what are the
qualifications and experience?

4. Do your staff health physicists or sr staff health physicists require
being CHP qualified?

5. Are staff health physicists hourly or salary employees?
