We do not use waste bag monitors. 5000 dpm (2.25 nCi) is the setpoint we use
for our Small Article Monitors, but we do not use them to release bagged waste.
Our SAMs are well shielded and relatively small so the count times are quite
reasonable

Subject: Powernet question

Hi Ephraim,

Can you ask what other utilities are using for waste bag monitor alarm set
points through use HPS powernet?

INPO provides an example that is lower than our current alarm set points
(2.25nCi vs 10nCi). Based on our MDA, we would be challenged to drop to
2.25nCi without significantly increasing count times. I’m interested how (if
at all) others are achieving this detection limit.

Thanks,

John

INPO 05-008 Rev2 Section 4.f:
f. Unconditional release of clean trash from the radiologically controlled area
Trash is monitored to ensure radioactive material will not be released off
site. This monitoring may be done in a number of ways. For example, use a
gamma-sensitive tool or box monitor capable of detecting contamination within
the bag of trash at a level of 5,000 dpm. Each piece of trash may be surveyed
with a handheld beta-sensitive frisker, rebagged, followed-by performance of an
aggregate survey of the material.
