Michelle,

Duke Energy has a Central Calibration Facility where all portable instrument
repairs and calibrations are performed. Our staff from this facility also
travel to the fleet sites to perform repairs and calibrations on fixed
contamination monitors as well. Our technicians are not part of the accredited
training program at the sites and we are a state licensed facility. We have
always been fortunate that most of our technicians had an electronic or RP
background and some have both. We cross train each other where needed. We have
also utilized manufacturer provided training classes for repairs. For
calibrations we have individual procedures for each model instrument and an
individual qualification to that procedure. Our qualification process is
similar to the accredited training program. Our QA program states that repairs
are made per manufacture technical manuals to original manufacturer
specifications. When necessary, we will consult with the manufacturers on how a
repair should be performed. We also have electrical safety procedures that we
follow.

I hope this helps even though we are not part of the sites accredited training
program.

Thanks,
Bill Faulkenberry, NRRPT

How do you qualify an individual to perform RP instrument calibrations?
At Vogtle 1&2 we have separate qualification cards for each instrument that we
have to qualify an individual on calibrations of the instrument. Additionally,
we send them to a fundamentals electronic review class if they do not have a
degree in electronics.
