VOF was quite cool, in fact one of the people helping us out was the guy who originally wrote it. However, we are inline with the current Sun strategy on boot, especially on the first go around here.
Mercury is an I/O rich, multimedia SBC we did here in the Labs. It's a small form factor and fanless. A number of internal projects at Sun are using it, mostly in the research end. With the console we used a simple 16550 initially but then moved to the MPSC on the Discovery. I believe the ODW uses a Via southbridge and the serial port from it.
