I just wanna share a lil opinion of mine on the statement by Mario on the point of 'freedom of expression' with a reference to the American public. to quote his comment: "amerika menjadi gudang para pemikir krn. berpikir dan berbicara dibiarkan lepas dan bebas." I am a lil bit disagree with his statement that freedom of speech has been wholly guaranteed by the American government. the freedom of speech in America has been cut down by the fact that those books or articles that have been written by those 'great writers' are mostly for the sake of government's propaganda. while at the same time, those who have sincerely expressed the 'reality' has either been expelled from the positions they held or has been deprived of the priviliges the academicians possess. To take a lil example, we must have not forgotten that the idea of the clash of civilizations proposed by Samuel P. Huntington in the late 1990s has become the benchmark of the on going 'crusade' of the Bush administration. this idea has been perfecly suited for the benefit of the 'American interests' that the world has to bear the effects of the megalomanic ambitions of those in power. Furthermore, in his book, Economic Democracy, J.W. Smith has explained 'freedom of speech' in America at length and concluded that 'there is no such freedom of speech in America but a mere disguised for the government's propaganda.' So, referring to the freedom of speech in America as our standard is like stepping back into the world of a 'disguised' democracy Indonesia has experienced for the past three decades that provided certain kind of 'freedoms'. Do we wanna be in that state of 'freedom'? CERTAINTLY NOT! And as such, im very much in agreement with Mario's statement that, to quote his statement again, " biarlah rakyat berbicara selagi masih ingin berbicara. karena berbicara itu merupakan aspirasi. dan dari aspirasi wacana lah biasanya bermunculan tokoh2 cerdas nasional yg aspiratif." I hope that this share of knowledge would enlightened us all in order to create a better world for us and for our future generations. Let's keep this lively discussion going, shall we?!
