dear qie,
sorry for late response. i totally agree with ur
points regarding the decline of speech freedom in the
usa, the propaganda scheme of things, etc. i dont
wanna go further into details and nitty gritty of this
kinda stuff, 'coz i assume all members here are full
aware of what we're talking about.
however, i need to point out a basic significant thing
that ur analysis miss a bit:
1. that freedom of speech (of right, of press, of
religion, etc) in usa guaranteed by the constitution.
u surely know this.
accordingly, any media protected by law to express any
idea including sharp criticism to governments,
individual of the establishments, etc.
that in further development the media collaborates
itself with the administration in spreading haux
propaganda is certainly another matter. and does not
in any way degrade the values of freedom itself.
2. the kind of bias in media actually a recent
development as far as real-politic of usa goes.
specially it happenes in the so-called 'war
situation'. (the condition which held firmly by the
ruling republican post-9/11 up till now). in this
kinda circumstances, any US media that aint support
the administration will be considered 'unpatriotic').
and it occured also during world war-I and II.
despite that, we all know, it's the american media
(the new york times, the new yorker, etc) that
disclosed the scandal of Abu Ghuraib in Iraq into the
world spotlight. is it possible that kinda of thing in
such countries like our own?
3. even in the so-called 'war situation' like today in
usa, media still enjoy the luxury of criticising or
parodizising the top leadership like bush, condy rice,
etc. with very insulting cartoon and humiliating in
print as well as electronic media.
just remember when some protesters burn the effigy of
megawati in makassar a couple years back, she got
really angry and made unnecessary statement suitable
only to layperson not to a statesperson like her.
im not a staunch supporter of america, especially its
bias foreign policies (as u can see from my publishes
articles/opinions) but at the same stroke i and we
gotta admit the egalitarian way of life americans have
successfully build and develop.
4. usa also known for its immigrant friendly country.
if u stay there for 5 years, u can propose for green
card, and if after that u never go out of the country
during the same tenure, u can propose the citizenship.
u cant do that in any country anywhere in the world,
including in india. if it's the case, u mustve been an
indian citizen or at least a green carder! :)
and this is why so many genius from around the globe
making long line to be american citizens. einstein
were one of those great guys who achievend the
so-called the 'american dream'. a dream that only be
achieved in america.
