KABUL, Afghanistan - Soldiers killed Afghanistan (news - web sites)'s=20 aviation minister in the western city of Herat on Sunday, and hours=20 of heavy factional fighting that followed killed between 50 and 100=20 people, a top commander said.=20 In Kabul, President Hamid Karzai's Cabinet convened an emergency=20 session following Mirwais Sadiq's killing, and ordered extra troops=20 sent from the capital to try to calm the city. Sadiq is the third=20 leading figure of Karzai's government, and the second aviation=20 minister, to be assassinated.=20 Sadiq =97 son of Herat's powerful governor, Ismail Khan =97 was shot in=20 his car in Afghanistan's main western city on Sunday afternoon,=20 presidential spokesman Khaleeq Ahmed said.=20 A top local military commander, Zaher Naib Zada, told The Associated=20 Press his forces had killed Sadiq in a confrontation at Zada's Herat=20 home.=20 Heavy gunbattles broke out between forces loyal to Khan and Zada's=20 soldiers after the killing. Zada said between 50 to 100 total had=20 died on both sides in the first hours of fighting.=20 Aid workers, also reached by telephone, reported gunfire and heavy=20 explosions in Herat and said they had been ordered to stay indoors.=20 U.N. workers scrambled into a bunker at their headquarters.=20 Zada claimed that Sadiq had come to his home to try to relieve him of=20 his command.=20 A police officer, Fahim, reached by telephone at the main police=20 station, gave a different account, saying Sadiq had gone to Zada's=20 residence to ask him about the killing of three civilians by Zada's=20 forces two days earlier.=20 Karzai's defense and interior ministers were preparing to travel to=20 Herat to try to determine the circumstances of the killing, and the=20 battles that followed, Ahmed said.=20 Karzai, who himself escaped a 2002 attempt on his life, said in a=20 brief statement from Kabul that he was "deeply shocked" by the=20 killing and offered condolences to Ismail Khan.=20 Ismail Khan, a former anti-Soviet commander who runs a large private=20 army, has had firm control over Herat since the fall of the Taliban=20 in late 2001.=20 But there have been persistent tensions =97 and occasional factional=20 fighting =97 between his men and those loyal to rival warlords.=20 His son, Sadiq, was widely viewed as his father's representative in=20 Karzai's government.=20 State television reported that Sadiq's father, Khan, had escaped a=20 separate attack unhurt. Ahmed and other officials said there had been=20 no attack on Khan, however.=20 Karzai's first civil aviation minister, Abdul Rahman, was=20 assassinated Feb. 14, 2002, at Kabul's airport, in circumstances that=20 remain unclear.=20 Gunmen shot and killed Vice President Abdul Qadir in the capital on=20 July 6, 2002.=20 Both of those killings remain unsolved.=20 Karzai has been constantly shadowed by Afghan and American bodyguards=20 armed with automatic weapons since a September 2002 assassination=20 attempt in the southern city of Kandahar.
