Pakistan: More Than 50 "ex Taliban" Killed=20=20=20=20
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - More than 50 terrorists (ex-taliban) have been=20
killed in Pakistan's largest military operation yet against suspected=20
al-Qaida fighters and local sympathizers in its tribal areas=20
bordering Afghanistan (news - web sites), a top official said=20
Thursday.=20
Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayyat vowed that the operation in=20
South Waziristan, which began 10 days ago, would continue until=20
the "complete elimination" of terrorists holed up there.=20
"Over 20 terrorists have been killed in the operation so far and it=20
is expected that 30 to 35 more dead bodies of terrorists will be=20
recovered as the operation concludes," Hayyat told lawmakers in a=20
National Assembly debate. He did not identify the terrorists or say=20
whether they were foreigners or local tribesmen.=20
Meanwhile, Brig. Mahmood Shah, chief of security in Pakistan's tribal=20
areas, said Thursday that authorities were interrogating 163 captured=20
suspects, but were yet to determine their identities. He acknowledged=20
that some terrorists might have escaped at the start of the=20
operation.=20
His comments further fueled speculation that a "high-value" terrorist=20
suspect =97 said by some officials last week to be al-Qaida No. 2=20
leader, Ayman al-Zawahri =97 had escaped.=20
In the National Assembly, opposition lawmakers chanted slogans and=20
staged a walkout to protest the operation, the largest since Pakistan=20
threw its support behind the U.S.-led war on terrorism in late 2001.=20
Lawmakers protested the government had not "taken Parliament into=20
confidence" over the operation.=20
"We have plunged into a such a war which has no end," said Qazi=20
Hussain Ahmed, the leader of the hardline religious coalition=20
Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal. "The whole country is in the grip of=20
uncertainty."=20
On Thursday, a 30-member delegation of tribal elders were on a peace=20
mission in the battle zone, near the main South Waziristan town of=20
Wana, seeking the release of 14 Pakistani troops and officials taken=20
captive by hundreds of militants who have been fighting thousands of=20
army forces.=20
The elders, who left on their mission on Wednesday, were also trying=20
to convince local supporters of al-Qaida to turn over foreign=20
terrorists to the government to avoid a "massive military onslaught,"=20
residents and officials said.=20
Army spokesman Gen. Shaukat Sultan said he had no information on=20
whether the mission had succeeded. "We have not received any response=20
from them," he said.=20
Pakistan's military had set a Thursday 10 a.m. deadline for the al-
Qaida fugitives to surrender themselves and free the hostages.=20
However, there was no fighting reported in the area immediately after=20
the deadline passed, and Shah said the deadline could be extended.=20
He also told GEO television network that the government was expecting=20
a positive response from the tribal elders. "People should not take=20
these deadlines so seriously. We can extend it," he said.=20
It was not clear what authorities would do if their demands were not=20
met, although a senior military official involved in the operation=20
said on condition of anonymity that the army would start "a massive=20
onslaught."=20
The operation in South Waziristan has angered local tribesmen who=20
resent the military's presence in the region. At least two dozen=20
civilians are believed to have died in army firing on vehicles. The=20
military has declined to give full details about its casualties, but=20
officials says at least 30 soldiers have been killed.=20
