Holy Uncle,
Notwithstanding with our disagreement on what terrorism is all about
and how to combat it, I found the article you forwarded quite
refreshing (see the link below).

QUOTE:

"However, a significant minority [of madrassas] acts as recruiting
centers for violent radicals who not only reject the West but also
seek to attack it by whatever means possible."

PETROSIAN:
What the author means is although the number of madrassas being used
as recruiting centers for terrorism is small, its effect is
significant. Agree. As we have seen, 10 people were enough to blow up
two gigantic towers and 3000 lives. So, it is at the hand of good
Muslims to take care of this problem rather than forcing the West to
do it for them which will obviously create a backlash.

QUOTE again:

"The Muslim world needs to be encouraged to embrace modern education
and undertake ijtihad (mental exertion to find solutions to problems)
on its own. Proposals such as adding the learning of science and
mathematics to the theology of conformity taught at traditional
madrassas are hardly solutions to the Muslim world's knowledge
deficit."

PETROSIAN:
Agree. The Muslim friends, in my view, have to redefine or reform the
meaning of "jihad" so as to minimize the bad consequence of polarized
meaning while at the same time reform the madrassas by transforming
them into modern schools. I do believe that some madrassas in
Indonesia have done so, but there are still a significant number of
them which are left behind and become an easy target for the radicals
to spread their intolerant and suicidal view.

Hopefully, through a self-criticism and internal reform, we could
build a better world which values life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness for everyone, irrespective of one's background.

Regards,

Petrosian
