In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Human Resource Development M.A.A. Fatmi said the EDUSAT, exclusively dedicated to educational purposes, would be launched by September. Close to 900 Karnataka schools will be linked to the satellite during the pilot project to impart education till class 12. The department of space has established pilot projects in the states of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, said the minister. He said the content for the pilot project was ready. The government is trying to identify departments that can use the satellite so that terminals can be installed in time for use when the spacecraft is available. Fatmi informed the house that a ground station and 500 terminals had been procured and the construction of the hub station was on in Ahmedabad. The agencies that could immediately use the system are those that have content already available like the University Grants Commission, National Council of Educational Research and Training, Indira Gandhi National Open University and the Indian Institutes of Technology.
