Five Promises of Mr. Yudhoyono
I am so impressed in reading again Yudhoyono's speech during the Annual Dinner of
USINDO on September 19, 2003. He mentioned five points, as:
First, we must continue to consolidate our democratic system. Secondly, we must press
on full speed with economic recovery and reforms. Thirdly, we must continue to pursue
legal reforms, especially in fighting corruption and establishing good governance.
Fourthly, we must normalize conditions and maintain stability in Indonesia�s troubled
areas : Aceh, Papua, Poso, Maluku, Central Kalimantan, West Timor. Our fifth crucial
national task is to maintain security and law and order.
I think he can accomplish his promises with the help of US and Australian friends.
Especially, concerning the threat of terrorism which is considered to be threatening
the national interest of reformation, he has to work hand in hand with the alliance of
US and Australia as they have the most sophisticated arms and the mowt powerful arm
forces.
Under Mr. Yudhoyono, Indonesia should acknowledge that there is always permanent
terrorism threat within the muslim country like Indonesia. He himself already
ackonowledged that Indonesia has become the front line state in fight against
terrorism. He also knows that "Jamaah Islamiyah" is behind the terrorism. He says,
"One of the most important threats to Indonesia, and to Southeast Asia and the US,
comes from a terrorist group calling itself the �Jamaah Islamiyah�. We find it
regrettable that this terrorist group have used commonly used terms in the Islamic
terminology (�Jamaah� and �Islamiyah�), thus hijacking and misrepresenting Islam as a
religion of peace and tolerance. The term �Jamaah Islamiyah� actually means �Islamic
community�, and this tends to confuse some muslims who have been accustomed to the
generic use of such term in their everyday life"
This terrorism is the only threat that challenges the whole interest of Indonesia,
ideologically, economically, politically, and especially it is the serious threat for
the Indonesian unity as a secular nation.
I am sure, the most popular muslim clerics like Abdurahman Wahid, Syafii Maarif, with
their organizations, will always support this effort.
These days the International community is watching carefully what Yudhoyono would be
doing. As the international community has given sympathy to him for his firm stance in
fighting against terrorism, so now, it is looking forward Yudhoyono's accomplishment.
