Hari ini, tepat 14 tahun yang lalu bangsa Jerman Timur yang komunis bersatu dengan bangsa Jerman Barat, dalam penyatuan yang istilahnya sekarang die Wende. Penyatuan dua bangsa yang berbeda ideologi itu terjadi setalah Tembok Berlin runtuh setahun sebelumnya. Dan runtuhnya Jerman Timur itupun menyusul setelah angin perubahan di Uni Soviet yang dibawa Gorbachev dengan glasnost (keterbukaan) dan perestroika (restrukturisasi)-nya.
Mula-mula orang membayangkan, bahwa setelah Jerman bersatu maka makin jayalah Jerman, maklum memang bangsa Jerman kan hebat. Lebih dari seratus milyad dollar biaya yang dipikul Jerman Barat untuk penyatuan itu. Sebagian biaya itu dikeluarkan oleh Trauhandanstalt (semacam BPPN) yang diberi tugas dua tahun untuk menjuali perusahaan negara di Jerman Timur, kalau tidak salah ada perusahaan swasta Indonesia yang ikut membeli yaitu Ciwi Kimia. Tapi ternyata perubahan dibekas Jerman Timur tidak selancar Republik Ceko dan Hongaria. Karena kecewa, maka ada sebagian orang sekarang di sebelah barat Jerman maupun di sebelah timur Jerman yang menyesali runtuhnya Tembok Berlin. Rupanya cap masa lalu sulit dihilangkan. Orang sebelah timur mengecap orang disebelah barat sombong sok tahu (Besser-Wessies). Sebaliknya orang di barat mencap orang timur tukang mengeluh terus (Jammer Ossies). Memang sebetulnya orang timur suka melebih-lebihkan kehebatan materi orang barat, sehingga mereka punya harapan yang terlalu tinggi seakan-akan setelah penyatuan mereka langsung jadi makmur tanpa kerja keras. Begitu pula orang di barat ada yang memandang enteng orang dari timur, yang mereka cap sebagai pemalas, dan tidak punya motivasi untuk maju.
