Sebagai orang biasa, untuk sementara saya tahan dulu
berkomentar tentang perkembangan menggembirakan di
tanah air yang terjadi kemarin dan pagi hari ini.
Sebagai gantinya, saya fwd berita sepele ini.
Pengadilan Singapura telah memutuskan agar Analia
Donohue membayar gaji PRT-nya, Achdaniah, yang telah
tidak dibayar selama 2 tahun. Masih ditambah lagi
dengan denda untuk pelanggaran lain.
Untuk ini Singapura tidak perlu dipuji, karena memang
begitu bunyi hukum disana, Anda benar. Tapi jangan
lupa bahwa diantara kita ada Donohue-Donohue lain yang
"kelupaan" membayar gaji PRT-nya, karena terlalu besar
rasa kekeluargaanya. Kebetulan saya kenal baik dengan
ndoro kakung dan ndoro putri itu.

Boss fined for not paying Indonesian maid for
nearly two years
SINGAPORE (DPA): An employer who did not pay her
Indonesian maid for almost two years has been fined
and ordered to pay the overdue wages in the first case
of its kind in Singapore, news reports said on
Wednesday.
Clerk Enilia Donohue, 29, was told to pay Achdaniah,
19, the sum of S$3,580(US$2,118) after the prosecution
successfully appealed against a magistrate's refusal
to make the order.
She was also fined 12,075 Singapore dollars
(US$7,144), equivalent to two years and 11 months'
maid levy, for illegal employment and S$3,000
(US$1,775 U.S.) for failing to pay Achdaniah.
It was the first time the Ministry of Manpower (MOM)
has prosecuted such a case and obtained a compensation
order in relation to unpaid wages.
Donahue admitted to two charges of employing a foreign
worker without a valid work permit and not paying her
wages.
The court order "sends a very strong, good signal so
employers will realize that it's their basic
responsibility to pay their foreign domestic workers
their wages," Helen Tan, president of the Association
of Employment Agencies, was quoted as saying.
The MOM said in a statement it would not hesitate to
haul such errant employers to court.
In December 2001, three months after Achdaniah started
working for Donohue, the MOM cancelled her work permit
because Donahue had failed to pay the monthly maid
levy.
Achdaniah was not told, and worked from December
1,2001 to August 9 last year. (*)
